Types and Methods of Overfishing

3 Main Types of Overfishing:

  • Growth overfishing- when fish are harvested at an average size that is smaller than the size that would produce the maximum yield per recruit. This issue is fixed by catching fish that are at a size that would reach the maximum yield (11).

  • Recruitment overfishing- when mature fish are depleted to the point where the ones that are left aren't able to reproduce before they're caught. To fix this, allowing fish to mature to their spawning age will stabilize its biomass and restore the species population (11).

  • Ecosystem overfishing- when the ecosystem balance is affected by overfishing (i.e. fishing predatory fish then moving on to smaller species once bigger fish are depleted) (11).
